Holland–Dozier–Holland was a songwriting and production team made up of Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland. The trio wrote, arranged and produced many songs that helped define the Motown sound in the 1960s. During their tenure at Motown Records from 1962 to 1967, Dozier and Brian Holland were the composers and producers for each song, and Eddie Holland wrote the lyrics. Mary Wells - Looking Back 1961-1964 Time and legions of other soul superstars have obscured the fact that for a brief moment, Mary Wells was Motown's biggest star. The_Soulful_Sound_Of_Mary_Wells.rarJust after I became aware of this new music coming out of Detroit, Motown released the classic, 'My Guy', which is now, of course, world known. Again, it was a Smokey song and produced by him. It was Motown's first worldwide monster hit and accordingly was crucial in the role of the development of soul music.
Mary decided that she would be better served at other labels and left Motown before a follow up was released, although, it was reportedly to have been 'When I'm Gone', which is included in this collection. She never again scaled the heights and her career faltered. There were still fine records released by her, especially the fantastic 'Dear Lover', one of the most underrated melodies.
